Adoption vs. Buying

Millions of individuals are estimated to add a new pet to their families each year. If more of them would choose to adopt a pet instead of buying one, the number of animals killed in shelters could be reduced significantly. Too many cats and dogs are euthanized simply because there is no one to give them a home. According to the Humane Society, approximately 2.7 million adoptable pets are put to sleep each year because no one is there to adopt them. By focusing more on adoption than buying, we could save millions of lives and also put a stop to puppy and kitten mills.

Pet stores sell animals for profit. Most animals sold in pet stores are bred in breeding mills, which is the main contribution to overpopulation. Unlike animal shelters, mills do not care about the well being of their animals. Many of these pets live in unlivable conditions that lead them to a life of suffering and disease. So instead of supporting these mills, why not adopt?

Here at Cats in Tow, we strive to do our best to make sure all the cats under our care are taken care of. Unlike pet stores and mills, we take in unwanted, stray, or abandoned cats and provide them with veterinary care, food, water, shelter, and aid them in finding forever homes.

In addition, adoption tends to be cheaper than purchasing from a store. Most animal shelters include shots, spaying/neutering, and sometimes even microchipping in your adoption fees. Most importantly, you can be sure that the cat you are adopting is healthy because our team of volunteers at Cats in Tow takes the time to care for our cats genuinely.

So, if you or someone you know is ready for the commitment of bringing a pet into the family, make sure you are adopting and not buying from a pet store. This means saving one of the more than millions of adoptable pets who enter the U.S. animal shelters every single year. A shelter pet will forever be grateful for their new home.
